Second phase of Census-2027 to start on Dec 1 in Uttarakhand

The second phase of the Census -2027 in Uttarakhand will commence from December 1, 2026. In the first phase, the enumerators conducted the House Census while in the second phase, the enumerators will start visiting every household of the State to count the number of people residing there. Commencing from December 1, the second phase of census will end in the State on January 4.

 Meanwhile, the Directorate of Census has started gearing itself for the massive exercise of the second phase of Census. The secretary Census, Deepak Kumar has released a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the employees deployed for census duties. As per the SOP, the employees seeking exemption from census work will be required to appear before a medical board. Kumar said that the enumerators will be deployed near their workplace.  The Census act clearly states that punitive action will be taken against the employees refusing census duty.

It is pertinent to mention here that currently Census work is underway in the snow bound areas of the State. The Census in the snow bound areas of the State spread over 131 villages and three towns in the four districts of the State commenced on September 1 and will culminate on September 30. Importantly, while the second phase of the census is starting on December 1 in Uttarakhand and three other poll bound states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa, it will commence in February in the rest of the country. The government of India has taken the decision to hold census early in Uttarakhand, UP, Punjab and Goa due to the Vidhan Sabha elections scheduled in February March in these states.
