The doctors at AIIMS Rishikesh claimed to have saved the life of a patient through successfully performing kidney transplant. They said that things were a bit difficult as hemodialysis had failed in his case and additionally, he was suffering from tuberculosis. They further claimed that this happens to be the second case of successful kidney transplant at the premier government facility in Rishikesh. Notably, the patient’s mother had donated her kidney to him to save his life.
The 32-year-old patient Sachin is currently posted at the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) office in Dehradun. He had been suffering from kidney-related complications and undergoing dialysis for the past three years. According to the AIIMS sources, he had approached the Nephrology department of the facility in May 2022. Through investigation, it was found that the patient had not just kidney complications but had a heart infection. Things were further compounded by the fact that he had been suffering from tuberculosis.
Speaking of this case, a specialist doctor of the AIIMS’s Nephrology department, Dr Sharon Kandari said that the patient had been treated for tuberculosis for the first four months. “During this period, his dialysis also continued. However, hemodialysis was becoming difficult in his case, given his weakening body. In such a situation, the alternative was to make the patient undergo peritoneal dialysis for the next three months,” he added.
It is noteworthy that the first kidney transplant was done at AIIMS Rishikesh in April 2023 during which the kidney of a 27-year-old resident of Nainital was transplanted.
The head of Urology department Dr Ankur Mittal who was included in the team that performed the kidney transplant in Sachin said that after the health condition of the patient became normal, kidney transplant had been done on September 16 under the guidance of a team of specialist doctors from Delhi. After being kept under observation for a few weeks, the patient was then discharged and he is now in perfect health, he added.
While hailing the second successful kidney transplant in the facility, the executive director AIIMS Rishikesh Dr Meenu Singh and medical superintendent Dr Sanjeev Kumar Mittal said that thanks to the efforts of the specialist doctors, the kidney transplant procedures are now being done at the AIIMS Rishikesh on a routine basis.
