On the anniversary of the 2001 attack on the Parliament by terrorists of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, two persons jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery and opened canisters that emitted a yellow-coloured smoke, spawning panic among the MPs.
This happened at around 1 pm during the zero hour following which Lok Sabha was adjourned. The MPs present during the incident said that the duo shouted slogan like ‘Down with Dictatorship. Police said that two persons, including a woman, were detained outside the Parliament for protesting while using cans that released colour smoke.
Dubbing this incident as a serious security breach on a special day, the Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that this had laid bare the security laxness in the Parliament when the country was observing the death anniversary of the nine persons who were killed in the 2001 Parliament attack.
Police said that the two persons, detained for the protest outside the Parliament, were identified as Neelam (42) and Amol Shinde (25), adding that the matter is being investigated. Security has been strengthened in the area following the incident.
