Shaheed memorial tournament begins at UPES

The ninth edition of the Shaheed Memorial Cup hosted by UPES started at the university’s sports ground on Tuesday. The annual cricket tournament is organised to honour martyrs of the Indian armed forces and to support their families.
This year, the event is being organised in memory of the Late Naik Harendra Singh and includes ten teams belonging to different departments of Uttarakhand government such as Agriculture, Peyjal Nigam, School Education, DG Medical, Irrigation and Secretariat, among others.
The inaugural ceremony began with a floral tribute to the martyrs . The chairman of HERS Sharad Mehra, vice chancellor Sunil Rai, pro-vice chancellor Ram Sharma, registrar Manish Madan and the deans of UPES schools were present on the occasion.
A communiqué from the university stated, “The tournament, which aims to foster awareness around the supreme sacrifice made by our national heroes and financially support their families, is now a tradition led by the university. This year, the event memorialises a martyr who belonged to the Pipalsari village in the Pauri district of Uttarakhand. The late Naik Harendra Singh is survived by his father Chhavan Singh Rawat, mother Sarojini Devi, wife Lata Devi and two children. The preliminary matches in this edition are slated to take place from December 13 to 22, followed by the semifinals on 24 and 26 and the finals on December 27. The family of the martyr will be honoured at the closing ceremony of the tournament. Scholarships for both children and a job opportunity under Project Naman would be provided to them.”
