Having been elected the chairman of the Shivaliknagar municipal council in Haridwar district for the second consecutive time, Rajeev Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party is looking forward to executing ambitious projects with the support of the State government. In an interaction with The Pioneer, he said that a proper ghat will be built along the Ganga river in the area. Sharma said that work on his dream project has started following an announcement to this effect by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The construction of this ghat will enable the locals and others to bathe in the Ganga here instead of travelling to Haridwar city for the same, he said.
Despite alleged sabotage, Sharma was elected to the post of the municipal council chairman by a margin of 1,900 votes in the recently concluded urban local body elections. He shared his ideas for various works in the municipality during the next five years.
Regarding the alleged sabotage during the elections he said, “Those who work against the party while being its members will inevitably be exposed. As far as development works are concerned, my focus is on the basic issues including the road network, electricity supply, construction of drains and waterlogging. I am committed to ensure better facilities than last time. During my previous term, the CISF bridge was constructed at a cost of about Rs 9.5 crore. This resolved the problem of traffic jams being faced by the public almost daily in the area. I had also ensured the beautification of various public parks in the municipality along with installation of high-mast lights in areas where required.”
He further said that he ensured work to resolve the drinking water issue in areas including Ramdham Colony, Navodaynagar, Subhashnagar and other localities, adding that he will ensure the supply of drinking water to all areas by the Jal Sansthan. Overhead tanks and pipelines will also be installed in areas where they are required. Sharma said that he had requested the CM to enable laying of sewer lines in the areas where they are absent. He stressed that the municipality is also serious about proper garbage disposal, adding that a large space will be sought from the authorities for establishment of a proper waste management centre where garbage from Shivaliknagar and its neighbouring areas will be disposed of. In order to enhance public safety, the municipality will work with the police for installation of CCTV cameras at all major crossroads in the area, he added.
