Members of different organisations of Pauri staged a protest demonstration at the gate of the collectorate building in Pauri under the banner of Srinagar Road Sangharsh Samiti on Friday. The protesters demanded that the shopkeepers who lost their shops in the anti-encroachment drive on the Srinagar Road should be given land and shops in the city so that they can earn their livelihood. The Pauri Sangarsh Samiti president Naman Chandola and Nagrik Kalyan Jagruk Vikas Samiti president Gabber Singh Negi with other members and municipal council member Anita Rawat supported the agitation by joining the demonstration.
The Pauri Sangharsh Samiti president Naman Chandola said that 34 shops were demolished under the anti-encroachment drive by the Pauri municipality on the Srinagar road of the district headquarter Pauri. The Pauri municipality had come bstructed these shops and handed them to the unemployed on the Srinagar Road nearly three decades ago. The shopkeepers were unaware of the fact that these shops were on the national highway land and they had been paying rent to the municipality for 35 years. The shopkeepers came to know the facts when they got the notice of the national highway . Chandola alleged that the Pauri municipality realised the rent till the demolition of the shops and kept the shopkeepers in the dark about the land belonging to national highway. The municipality is now avoiding the shopkeepers whose shops were demolished in the anti-encroachment drive, the protesters alleged.
