Former Kichha MLA Rajesh Shukla accused the current Congress MLA Tilak Raj Behar of failing to fulfill his responsibilities as an MLA. Shukla told the media that on February 9, 2018, a girl in Kichha filed a rape case at the police station. The police arrested the accused who was jailed. However, he was released on bail shortly after and allegedly began pressurising the victim’s family to drop the case. When the family refused to comply, the girl faced constant harassment, leading her to commit suicide in June 2023, he said. Shukla further said that she had named those involved in the incident in her suicide note. The former MLA alleged that following the suicide, Behar has persistently pressurised the victim’s family to settle the case. When the family refused, the MLA staged a sit-in protest, leading to the police registering a case against the victim’s family on July 3, 2024, allegedly under the MLA’s influence, he added.
Shukla urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Pradesh Congress Committee president Karan Mahara to investigate Behar’s actions and take appropriate action as they are leaders who advocate for constitutional rights. Shukla has also written to the Vidhan Sabha speaker seeking her intervention in the matter.
