The senior superintendent of police of Udham Singh Nagar Manjunath TC formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday to investigate the case registered against a Maulvi of a Madarsa in Rudrapur for allegedly raping and sexually assaulting pre-teen girls. The accused Shabbir Raja (42) taught Urdu at a Madarsa in Rudrapur and was recently arrested for allegedly raping and sexually assaulting young girls in his room by scaring them with stories of djinn. The SSP said that the accused allegedly used to take the girls one by one inside his room and make them watch porn on his phone before violating them. He had been reportedly committing the crimes for about two months. Manjunath said that one girl’s mother filed a complaint against him last week. She also alleged that apart from her daughter, the Maulvi also sexually assaulted four other girls. Since the extent of the crime turned out to be much bigger, the SSP formed an SIT on Sunday. The accused was brought from the jail in Haldwani under police custody and taken to the crime scene for a physical inspection. During the inspection, the accused’s mobile phone was recovered, which had been hidden by him in a room of the Madarsa. The browsing history of the recovered phone reportedly revealed a large number of pornographic videos, which were mentioned by the minor girls during their statements, confirming their claims. The mobile phone is being sent for forensic examination, the SSP said.
