Situation remains stable in Joshimath for now

No rise in number of cracked houses since January 20, underground water discharge decreases further
The visible effects of land subsidence in Joshimath have not aggravated in recent days with the number of cracked homes in the town remaining stable at 863. According to government reports, the number of buildings identified with cracks in Joshimath has not increased further since January 20. Of the buildings identified with cracks, 181 are located in the area declared an unsafe zone.
The discharge of underground water which was 540 litres per minute (LPM) on January 6 has dropped considerably to 18 LPM, according to the daily status report on the Joshimath situation released by the district disaster management authority of Chamoli on Thursday. As per the report, the district administration has shifted a total of 243 families with 878 members to temporary accommodations and relief camps due to safety concerns. Apart from these, 117 members of 53 families have shifted either to the homes of their relatives or to rented accommodations.
It is pertinent to mention here that recently the Chamoli district administration presented three options for the displacement and rehabilitation of the subsidence disaster affected residents of Joshimath in the meeting of the high powered committee chaired by additional chief secretary Anand Bardhan. These options will be presented before the State cabinet which is slated to meet on February 10.
