Small U’khand serves the nation in big way
24 Gentlemen Cadets in passing out contingent from the state.
The population of the small Himalayan state Uttarakhand is less than 1 percent of the population of the country but when it comes to serve the nation the state has always remained at the forefront. In the passing out contingent of 147 regular and 130 Technical Graduate (TG) course at Indian Military Academy today, 24 Gentlemen Cadets (GCs) belonged to the tiny state.
The biggest state in terms of population, Uttar Pradesh (UP) tops the list of states with a contribution of 50 GCs to the passing out contingent. Another small state Haryana is on the second place in the list with 45 candidates while Bihar is on third position with 32 GCs. Uttarakhand is in fourth position. Incidentally Madhya Pradesh which is one of the big states could contribute only 12 GCs in the passing out contingent of officers. The non-inclination of the people of Gujarat in serving in the armed forces is clearly evident this time also as only four GCs are from this state. Another big state Andhra Pradesh also fares poorly in the list with only six GCs. The list also shows that the youths of West Bengal too are not much interested to serve the armed forces as only six GCs from here would be part of the passing out contingent. The states of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh which were created along with Uttarakhand in the year 2000 also have less representation with only six and four GC respectively this time. These states are much bigger in area and population than Uttarakhand.
The passing out contingent had good participation from Rajasthan (18), Punjab (15), Delhi (13) and Himachal Pradesh (10).
