Snowfall and rain bring temperatures down across State, higher reaches covered in white
Dry weather forecast today, dense fog warning issued for two districts

Temperatures dropped considerably in various parts of the State with rain in the plains and snowfall in the mountains on Saturday night and Sunday. Various mountainous regions in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Nainital and other districts witnessed snowfall on the weekend while Dehradun and other areas in the plains and lower altitude mountainous areas witnessed rain. The minimum temperature dropped three degrees below normal to minus one degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar while the maximum temperature in the provisional State capital Dehradun dropped six degrees Celsius below normal to 12.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday while other parts also witnessed a similar drop in temperatures.
The State Meteorological Centre has forecast that dry weather is likely to prevail in the State today. However, it has issued a yellow warning (Watch) regarding the possibility of moderate to dense fog likely to occur in Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar districts. The provisional State capital Uttarakhand is forecast to witness a mainly clear sky on Monday with fog/mist likely to occur during the morning hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 19 degrees Celsius and eight degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun today.
Meanwhile, various high altitude regions in Chamoli district witnessed snowfall. The winter sports destination Auli was covered in a fresh blanket of white, which has also started attracting tourists. Snowfall began here late on Saturday night and paused after about a foot of snow on the ground. The snowfall resumed on Sunday afternoon. More than a foot of snow has been reported in Auli in other high altitude areas in this region. Similarly, snowfall was also witnessed in Badrinath with more than two feet of snowfall being reported in the temple township.
Rain and snowfall was also witnessed in various parts of the Kumaon region on the weekend. Nainital witnessed its second snowfall of the season on Sunday. There was comparatively less snowfall in the lower areas of Nainital city though there was more snowfall in the higher mountainous sites in the area. The tourists who arrived here on the weekend spent a considerable time in the mountains enjoying the snow-clad surroundings. Snowfall started during the wee hours and people were greeted by a blanket of white when they woke up on Sunday morning. The rain and snowfall lasted for a few hours during the morning. Though there was upto five inches of snow in various sites in Nainital, there was more snow in neighbouring locations.
Meanwhile, the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded on Sunday were 12.8 degrees Celsius and 10.2 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 22.5 degrees Celsius and eight degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 3.4 degrees Celsius and minus one degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 7.7 degrees Celsius 2.3 degrees Celsius in New Tehri.
