Snowfall in the higher reaches and light rain in the plains brought the temperature down across the State on Saturday. The change in weather at the fag end of winter comes at a time when temperatures have been a few notches above normal in most parts of the State. Similar conditions are expected in parts of the State on Sunday with the State Meteorological Centre forecasting very light to light rainfall likely at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts. Apart from this, dry weather is likely to prevail in the remaining districts of the State today.
The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a mainly clear sky with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be about 26 degrees Celsius and eight degrees Celsius respectively.
Snowfall was reported in the high altitude areas of Garhwal and parts of Kumaon on Saturday with light rainfall in the lower altitudes. In the Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts, snowfall was reported in the high altitude areas including Badrinath and Gangotri. People in Chamoli woke up to cloudy skies with snowfall in the upper reaches and rain the lower areas. The snow sports destination Auli also witnessed snowfall bringing cheer to those in the tourism related businesses and the visitors. The tourists in Auli made the most of the snowfall, indulging in skiing and other sports and recreational activities. The intermittent snowfall in Auli has brought cheer not only to the local traders and visitors but also the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam which manages the local tourist rest house and the chair lift at Auli.
Meanwhile, the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in various parts of the State on Saturday were 23.6 degrees Celsius and 10.3 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 24.2 degrees Celsius and 6.7 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 13.1 degrees Celsius and 7.1 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 10.6 degrees Celsius and 4.4 degrees Celsius in New Tehri. Apart from the snowfall in the higher reaches, light rain was reported in various areas with 2.4 millimetres in Tehri, 0.6 millimetre in Dehradun, 1.4 millimetre in Mussoorie, 0.5 millimetre in Mukteshwar, 2.6 millimetres in Chamoli and two millimetres in Dhanaulti.
