The souring of relations between India and Canada has become a cause of concern for parents in Dehradun whose children are studying in Canada. Many parents have expressed their worry regarding the safety of their children who have traveled to Canada for higher education. They are urging the Indian government to promptly address these issues with the Canadian government.
India and Canada are dealing with an unprecedented diplomatic crisis. It began after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dropped a bombshell allegation earlier this week telling parliament that there were credible allegations of a possible link of the Indian government in the murder of a Khalistani separatist in Canada in June. Considering th1s, an advisory issued by India stated that Indian students studying abroad should be cautious, as Indians could be targeted in Canada. This has resulted in a major concern among Indian parents in the city regarding the wellbeing of their children.
A parent, Vishaka Nagpal said, “As a parent of a son residing in Canada, I am deeply concerned about his well-being in light of the current situation. The tensions between India and Canada have heightened my worries about my son’s safety. In light of this, I have advised my son to avoid gatherings and to remain in his accommodations as much as possible. I sincerely hope that the situation between India and Canada improves in due course of time.”
Another parent, Seema Malhotra said, “My daughter is pursuing her higher education in Surrey, Canada. I am apprehensive about her safety given the present circumstances. Furthermore, her sense of unease intensifies due to her solitary presence. I earnestly urge the Indian government to swiftly resolve the conflicts with Canada, ensuring the safety and security of our children residing there.”
Commenting on the situation in Canada, Indian student Shivansh Kapoor said, “I have come to Canada recently to complete my higher studies. With respect to the prevailing situation concerning Khalistani issues, I can confidently state that the situation in Canada remains favourable. I have not encountered any instances of Indian students being targeted or harmed in relation to these ongoing disputes. Nonetheless, I exercise caution and remain vigilant while navigating my surroundings in Canada.”
