Changing the location of the Doon Library and Research Centre (DLRC) has resulted in a significant increase in the number of its members. However, space crunch is coming in the way of the library providing all types of books, particularly those on science and technology, to its readers.
While talking to The Pioneer, the DLRC librarian, J P Goyal said that they are trying to collect additional books, particularly those on science and technology, to cater to the varied interests of the readers. “Earlier, the long-time members would come. Now, we are having new members. But we do not have enough space here to keep additional books,” he said.
Goyal further said that they are quite happy with the considerable increase in the number of members following the change of the library’s location. “We now have more members than we had in the previous years. After we relocated it to the centre of the city, the number of members shot up to nearly 5000. Earlier, the people were not aware of its existence as it was not easily reachable,” he said and added that it took them many years to shift DLRC to its present location.
The librarian said that as youngsters are becoming members of the library in increasing numbers, they are feeling the need to provide them with books on science and technology. “But the lack of space is not allowing us to move forward in this matter. We, however, hope to overcome this soon,” he said.
Asked whether DLRC is doing anything to help the students from the economically unprivileged families, he nodded and said that his library is helping them with books which they cannot afford to buy from the markets like those which help them prepare for competitive exams.
