With about five crore people having visited Haridwar during the recently concluded Kanwad Mela, a huge quantity of garbage has also been left behind in the city. The district administration undertook a special sanitation campaign on Saturday to clear the city. Government officials along with public organisations participated in this campaign.

As part of the campaign undertaken on district magisrtrate Mayur Dixit’s directions, cleaning was carried out in the 13 zones of Mela area. The Ganga Ghats and other spots were also cleaned during this activity. Along with Dixit, senior superintendent of police Pramendra Singh Dobal, chief development officer Akanksha Konde and Haridwar-Roorkee Development Authority vice chairman Anshul Singh also cleared garbage on the occasion.

Singh said that this is service to goddess Ganga and not just a government campaign. Stressing on the importance of public participation, he appealed to citizens to take out a day in the week for cleaning their surroundings. Dixit said that it is the citizen’s moral responsibility to keep the surroundings and city clean. He appreciated the citizens and voluntary organisations for participating in the sanitation campaign.
