Following the rising cases of autism among children, the Society of Pollution and Environmental Conservation Scientists (SPECS) along with Speaking Cube Online Mental Health Consulting Foundation and Kurmanchal Cultural and Welfare Council, will organise a summer camp Special Education Centre for Special Children (SNEHAM) in Dehradun from June 1. Stating this while addressing the media on Tuesday, SPECS secretary Brij Mohan Sharma said that the primary goal of SNEHAM is to enhance the lives of special children by providing them with training in livelihood skills and life skill activities. He added that the project will be overseen by experts, including senior psychologists and child development specialists.
The camp will focus on incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities to foster hands-on learning experiences and help children develop critical thinking skills like problem-solving. Alongside STEM experiments, outdoor activities including nature walks, team-building exercises and recreational games will also be held while encouraging social interaction, physical exercise and sensory stimulation in the natural environment, he said.
Sharma further emphasised that parents must identify symptoms of autism disorders in children which include behavioural changes, limited communication and others. Considering the symptoms, parents must promptly seek appropriate treatment for their children instead of overlooking it.
