To enhance the quality of medical care, the administration of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) has established a dedicated unit for sports injuries in the outpatient department (OPD) of the hospital. Stating this, chief medical superintendent Dr RS Bisht said that for several months, the orthopaedic department’s OPD has been treating a variety of muscular issues under the supervision of orthopaedic surgeons throughout the week. However, the high patient volume has sometimes hindered effective crowd management and resulted in insufficient attention to critical injuries. To address this concern, the administration has recently initiated a separate unit specifically designed to address sports injuries for athletes.

He further stated that the orthopaedic outpatient department is currently being operated on the ground floor of the OPD building. A dedicated unit of specialist doctors has now been established to oversee sports injuries at the hospital. To facilitate this, the administration has designated Thursdays as the specific day when Dr Pawnesh Lohan, who is an orthopaedic surgeon, will see patients. He noted that sports injuries, facial injuries and trauma injuries are distinct categories that require specialised attention from medical professionals. With the establishment of a separate unit for sports injuries, players will no longer need to visit the hospital regularly to find out when the doctor is available. Instead, they will have a designated day to consult with a specialist for their sports-related injuries. He also stated that the separate sports unit has been established but will commence its functioning at the hospital next week after completing all necessary arrangements.

He further stated that a dedicated unit for spine injuries has also been established in addition to addressing sports injuries. This unit will manage spine injury cases at the OPD building starting on Monday. This arrangement will not only ensure that patients receive specialised attention but will also improve crowd management within the hospital on a regular basis. Further, it will promote consistency among the medical staff. He added that Dr Vikrant Chauhan is a specialist in managing spine injury cases.
