The Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) has continued its various efforts for water conservation. About seven lakh litres of water is recycled daily in the campus of Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) and used for irrigation. The trust has also facilitated clean drinking water supply in 550 villages across the nation. It has also facilitated construction of more than 600 water conservation tanks with 7,000 litre capacity. SRHU vice chancellor Vijay Dhasmana said that on World Water Day, another initiative is being undertaken on the university campus on Tuesday. As part of this effort, an empty one litre bottle will be filled half with sand and placed in the toilet cisterns. This will entail saving of one litre water in the toilet flush. Stating that on an average, one toilet is flushed 15 times per day so placing the bottles half filled with sand will result in saving 15 litres of water per day, he said. With about 2,000 toilets on campus, an average of 30,000 litres of water will be saved on a daily basis with this initiative, said Dhasmana. Stating that about Rs three is spent on extracting one litre of water from the ground, he added that saving one crore litres of water in a year will also enable a saving of Rs three crore.
