The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh conducted an inspection of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital on Tuesday following the recent incident in which the body of a newborn baby was found in the hospital’s toilet. This incident raised concerns about safety and security measures in the hospital. Singh said that no such pregnant woman reportedly came to GDMC who was not given proper care and can be associated with the body of an infant that was found stuck in the toilet seat of the hospital as per the investigation so far. He conducted an inspection of the hospital and the local police station and reviewed the hospital’s CCTV camera installations and overall security arrangements. It was observed that the number of CCTV cameras in the hospital premises was inadequate and the observation room for monitoring the cameras was found to be closed. The SSP noted the need to enhance security measures by increasing the number of CCTV cameras and ensuring 24 hours monitoring. Following the findings, the SSP communicated with the hospital administration to install additional CCTV cameras throughout the facility and suggested relocating the observation room to the police post located near the Emergency department. This arrangement will facilitate continuous monitoring of the CCTV feeds.
Besides this, the SSP checked the records of deliveries at the hospital over the past three days. The records revealed that a total of 41 women had delivered during that period and out of these, 40 infants were born healthy while one infant was stillborn, whose family resides in the Vasant Vihar area. The family has since conducted the last rites, which have been verified by the police, he said. He stated that there has been no information regarding any patients or women who had come for delivery in connection with the recent incident so far. However, the SSP has ordered to register a police case in the matter due to the sensitivity of the situation to conduct a thorough investigation into all possible aspects of the incident. He also emphasised on the importance of ensuring the safety and security of patients and their families within the hospital premises to prevent such incidents in the future and asked the hospital to take necessary actions soon.
