State Govt protecting liquor mafia- Karan Mahara

Launching a scathing attack on the State government, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has said that the deaths of people from consuming spurious liquor in Pathri area of Haridwar district has exposed the government. Accusing the State government of protecting the liquor mafia, the Congress leader said that the incident has exposed the law and order condition and pathetic functioning of the Excise department in the State.
Mahara said that hundreds of deaths from spurious liquor in Bhagwanpur, Roorkee, Tehri and Patheria Pir of Dehradun in the last few years had shocked the people of Uttarakhand but the BJP government of the State has continued to adopt an indifferent attitude towards such incidents.
He said that it appears that the State government is protecting the liquor mafia. The PCC president said that the State administration has failed to take a firm step towards an excise policy in the State.
He said that had the State government taken any stringent action on those responsible for past incidents of deaths from spurious liquor the incident of Saturday in Haridwar district could have been prevented. Mahara added that the situation is even more serious in view of the upcoming Panchayat elections in Haridwar district. The Congress leader expressed grief at the deaths of people in the incident and prayed for peace to their souls. He demanded that strict action should be taken against those involved in the incident.
