State holds great potential in geothermal energy: Sundaram

The secretary power R Meenakshi Sundaram has said that geo-thermal energy holds great potential in Uttarakhand. He said that a study by Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology shows that Uttarakhand possesses one third of the total geothermal energy production potential of the country. He said that the State would collaborate with Iceland to explore the potential of the geothermal energy in the State.
Sundaram informed that the CM solar self employment scheme launched in the year 2018-19 failed to receive good public response but after the changes in the scheme in 2022 it is evoking tremendous response and the project of 174 MW capacity was in various stages of construction. He said that the scheme is receiving very good response in Tehri, Uttarkashi and Champawat districts where many villages have become solar villages in recent times. The secretary further informed that the PM Surya Ghar Yojana has become very popular in the State and the State government is planning to saturate all the government buildings with rooftop solar power plants in two to three years.
The secretary claimed that Uttarakhand leads the country in disposal rate of applications under the scheme. He informed that the small hydro power policy has also been revised in the state, under which tenders have been issued for six projects. Apart from this, a total of 19 more projects are in the pipeline, Sundaram said.
