State moves closer to setting up cancer institute in Haldwani

The Central government has accorded its approval in principle for the expansion of the Swami Ram cancer hospital in Haldwani. The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has given its approval for cutting 44 trees for this purpose. The establishment of the State cancer institute will enable the expansion of the hospital.Health secretary R Rajesh Kumar said that the expansion of this facility will provide all tests and treatment for cancer patients in one place. Cancer patients will not have to travel to other cities for treatment after the expansion of this hospital, he said.
The Health secretary informed that a project amounting to Rs 103 crore has been approved for the State cancer institute in Haldwani. A sum of Rs 69 crore was released to the State government for this purpose in 2021. The State government has so far approved 152 posts for this institution. In addition to this, a proposal for 255 necessary posts has been sent to the administration for approval. Kumar further said that consistent efforts of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Health minister Dhan Singh Rawat have resulted in formalities for land and other aspects being completed for the first phase of the construction of the State cancer institute. The hospital will be constructed in two phases. The first phase will entail construction of the ward block and service block, which will be started soon. The process of purchasing the latest machines and equipment for the hospital is also underway. The second phase will entail the establishment of the diagnostic block, nuclear medicine block, preventing oncology and other speciality and super speciality departments. There will be a total of 31 departments in this facility, he said.
The Central government had approved regularisation of the campus under Government Medical College, Haldwani on 1.75 hectare forest land in September 2022.
