Though the State government has so far focussed mainly on women’s self help groups, the State’s first men’s self help group in the Lalkuan Nagar Panchayat has also started earning appreciation from both the public and the authorities. The Nagar Panchayat terms ended in December 2023, after which the sub divisional magistrate was appointed as the administrator here while the executive officer was made responsible for all the tasks.

Executive officer Rahul Kumar Singh made consistent efforts and facilitated the creation of ‘Gulmohar’ the State’s first men’s self help group under the administrator Paritosh Verma’s guidance. The five-member Gulmohar team first handled the task of sanitation, garbage collection and segregation in the Nagar Panchayat area. The work by this SHG has created a source of income. The team formed in June last year has facilitated door-to-door garbage collection in seven wards along with the ITBP campus and some areas adjoining the Nagar Panchayat area. The men have collected the segregated garbage from 2,700 homes and commercial establishments, used the organic waste to prepare manure and sell the recyclable waste.

Singh said that the men’s self help group is being paid for its work.  The Nainital district magistrate Vandana Singh felicitated Singh for commendable work on Republic Day considering the work done in the sphere of sanitation in the Lalkuan Nagar Panchayat. Appreciating the work done by the official and the SHG, the district magistrate said that other local bodies should also do likewise.
