In latest news from Doon, while addressing a two-day workshop on ‘Design, Construction and Maintenance of Steel Bridges’ organised jointly by the Indian National Group of International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (ING-IABSE), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India and the Public Works Department, Uttarakhand on Saturday, the State PWD minister Satpal Maharaj said that construction of steel bridges is important for better connectivity particularly in a State like Uttarakhand , given its rapidly increasing traffic volume. Compared to traditional bridges, these bridges are light in weight, constructed in less time and capable of withstanding the climate fluctuations, he said, adding that parts of such bridges can be replaced easily and the their maintenance costs are not much.
The Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta was also present at the workshop and addressed it.
