Steps to be taken to enhance security of railway stations, tracks

Strict action will be taken in cases of stone pelting on trains and tampering with railway tracks. Cases will be registered and the persons responsible will be arrested. Sites will be identified to stop stone pelting on trains and talks will be held in the localities where the people will also be provided counselling. This and other decisions were taken in the meeting of the State railway safety committee presided over by director general of police Ashok Kumar on Friday. The meeting was held in accordance with instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
It was also decided that cases will be lodged immediately and relief will be provided to the victims in case of theft, pickpocketing and other such incidents in trains and railway stations. The percentage of solving the cases should also be increased. The Government Railway Police and Special Operation Group will also be strengthened. The GRP and Railway Protection Force will establish coordination and exchange information on professional criminals and other important information in order to prevent crimes and for crime control.
Further, in order to minimise damage caused to wildlife from operation of trains, it was decided that a coordination meeting will be held with the Forest department and Rajaji tiger reserve authorities to identify accident prone spots and undertake fencing in such areas along with taking other measures. The recommendations from security audits of important railway stations should be implemented. It was also decided that proper lighting and fire extinguishing equipment will be provided.
In addition to ensuring proper CCTV camera coverage the checking/frisking of people entering and exiting the railway stations will also be ensured. For the security of railway stations and tracks, the RPF, GRP and local police will conduct joint checks in railway stations along with inspection of tracks on foot and using push trolleys. The railway officials assured provision of seats for GRP personnel on escort duty in trains. It was also decided that the GRP and RPF will share the escort duty chart. The deployment of GRP on the Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail line and establishment of new police stations was also discussed in the meeting.
