The Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) arrested a smuggler in Haldwani in the wee hours of Monday with 190 canisters of illegally procured pine tree resin from Someshwar in Almora district. The STF is pursuing those involved in buying and selling of such illegally procured pine resin.
The STF senior superintendent of police Ayush Agrawal informed that the authorities have been receiving information of smuggling of pine resin from the forests of mountainous areas of the State. He said that the STF got a tip-off on Sunday that a truck carrying several canisters of pine resin is arriving in Haldwani in the wee hours of Monday.
The authorities held a truck for checking and found 190 canisters of pine resin. However, one of the two smugglers escaped from the spot taking advantage of the darkness. The arrested accused is Haldwani resident Jagmohan Tiwari who also owns the truck. He revealed during the investigation that the absconding accused Shobhan was his driver and both of them were bringing the resin from Someshwar. Agrawal informed that both of them have been involved in smuggling of pine resin for some time and a few cases of smuggling are also registered against them in Haldwani.
