Strengthen public transport to reduce traffic congestion in Doon: CS

The chief secretary S S Sandhu has said that the public transport system should be strengthened to reduce traffic congestion in Dehradun. The CS took a meeting of the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) at the State secretariat on Wednesday. In the meeting he stressed the need for adopting a holistic view to improve the traffic in Dehradun. He said that both small and large measures are needed to reduce traffic congestion in the city.
Emphasising on strengthening the public transport system, the CS said that such a system is needed to be developed under which people should not have to wait for more than five to seven minutes for changing the vehicles and in which they do not need to walk for more than 300 meters. He suggested that the traffic congestion points should be earmarked and the crossings and tri junctions should be improved.
He stressed on strict enforcement of rules to reduce congestion and said that by imposing more penalties on the vehicles parked in no parking zones, the traffic congestion can be reduced to a large extent in Dehradun. The CS said that a project on construction of underpasses, foot over bridges, elevated roads, ropeway, bypasses and PRT service should be prepared to prevent congestion of traffic.
The additional chief secretary Anand Vardhan, Secretary AS Hyanki, district magistrate (DM) Sonika and managing director (MD) Uttarakhand Metro rail project Jitendra Tyagi attended the meeting.
