Students should utilise skills & knowledge for welfare of villages: Governor

The governor, lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh urged students to utilise their knowledge and skills for the welfare of villages and disadvantaged sections of society. He made these remarks during the fifth convocation of Doon University on Friday. In his address, he emphasised that this moment marks the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of students and presents a golden opportunity to realise their dreams. The governor further said that students must not limit themselves to merely seeking jobs but to consider starting their own ventures based on their knowledge, creativity and hard work, aiming to become successful entrepreneurs. He inspired the youth to play a significant role in the country’s progress and to strengthen its economy.

He urged students to extend their contributions beyond personal careers and actively participate in the social upliftment and development of the country as responsible citizens. Singh also praised the achievements of Doon University, noting that it has received an ‘A’ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) this year, which reflects its high standards in academic and research work. He congratulated the vice chancellor Surekha Dangwal and the entire university community for this accomplishment.

Higher Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat congratulated the students and emphasised that prioritising both skill development and cognitive growth is essential for them.

Former director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and Padma Bhushan recipient P Balram appreciated the university for its efforts to provide skill-based education and foster a scientific temperament in higher education in Uttarakhand.

Notably, a total of 398 graduate degrees, 293 postgraduate degrees and 25 doctoral degrees were conferred to students and scholars of the year 2023 during the convocation ceremony. Additionally, 37 students who excelled in their respective courses received gold medals. Two students- Sumit Sharma from the School of Media and Communication Studies and Rishabh Uniyal from the School of Management, were presented the Professor Gajendra Singh All Round Best Student Award.
