The students union elections in all the government colleges and universities in the State will be held on November 5. The Higher Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat has directed all the vice chancellors and director of Higher Education to make all the preparations for the elections on time. On a stern note the minister has directed the authorities to ensure that the recommendations of the Lyngdoh committee are followed in the students’ union elections. He said that the State government has taken many important decisions to regularise the academic session in higher education which include ‘one examination, one result, one election and one convocation’ policy. He said that last year the elections were simultaneously held on one date in all the colleges and universities and this year also a decision to hold elections was taken on November 5. The decision to hold elections on one date prevents unnecessary disturbance in the studies of students. Rawat said that the universities and the colleges have been directed to implement the recommendations of the Lyngdoh committee in the elections under which any students can contest the election of office bearer of student union once and the election of executive council twice. The Lyngdoh committee recommendations maintain that the contestants should hold canvassing and campaign inside the college and university campus only and they cannot spend more than Rs 5,000 in the campaigning. There will be a ban on pasting posters, pamphlets on the private premises and buildings. The minister said that the action will be taken on the candidates found engaged in the violation of the recommendations of Lygndoh committee.
