Continuing land subsidence in Joshimath has caused major cracks in two hotel buildings along the national highway in the Sinhdwar ward causing the building to tilt. More than a dozen families living in the vicinity of these buildings are now at risk. After a survey conducted by the local administration the residents of the buildings have vacated the buildings under threat. The owners of buildings near the affected buildings have submitted a memorandum to the administration and sought measures for their security.
In view of the continued subsidence in Joshimath, the municipality is conducting a survey of all the wards. Of the 16 families living in homes damaged by subsidence, eight have left the damaged buildings. The municipal council chairman Shailendra Panwar said that the municipal team is conducting inspection in whichever ward from where complaints of subsidence are being received. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the Chamoli district magistrate has also conducted an inspection of Sinhdwar, Manoharbagh and Gandhinagar wards. The district magistrate Himanshu Khurana said that during the inspection of Manoharbagh, he also saw large cracks in the farms. He said that a survey team had conducted an inspection in the past and had recommended work on the sewerage plan and drainage system. Work on these aspects is being carried out. The more affected areas are being inspected and necessary works will be expedited, he said.
