The successful organisation of the 38th National Games which concluded on Friday in Haldwani has brought laurels for the sports department of Uttarakhand and the State government. The organised holding of the grand sports event at nine places in different parts of the State has also highlighted the leadership skills of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami who was consistently motivating the administration and monitoring the preparations.

Dhami took things in his own hands after there was delay in the approval in the organisation of the event which created confusion on the dates of the National Games. He personally met the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha in New Delhi and got the green signal on the organisation of the Games on October 9 last year. The State government had a time period of only three and half months to organise the event.

Sensing this the CM himself plunged himself into the preparations and was on ground zero to monitor the activities himself. The State administration had made plans to organise the National Games at nine centres which included towns such as Pithoragarh and Tehri where due to paucity of facilities, the organisation of games was a major challenge. However the challenge of providing necessary facilities to the players, coaches, officers and the sports lovers was successfully met by the sports department and State administration.

The National Games were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 28 at Rajiv Gandhi stadium and the valedictory ceremony was addressed by the union Home minister Amit Shah in Haldwani. CM Dhami regularly visited different centres to take stock of the preparations during the 18 days the Games were underway. It not only kept the organisers on their toes but also boosted the morale of the players and those involved in the organisation of the games.
