The neurosurgery department physicians at Himalayan Hospital have established a new world record by successfully performing clipping surgery on the largest brain aneurysm ever recorded globally. The hospital claimed that a successful operation was performed on a massive 6.3 cm aneurysm for the first time in the world. Senior neurosurgeon Dr Brijesh Tiwari of Himalayan Hospital said that 17-year-old Dehradun resident Ashish had been suffering from headaches and intermittent vomiting for 15 days before visiting the OPD. Following various health screenings including an MRI, an unusually large swelling was observed in the front left side of his brain. Suspecting that it was not a normal swelling, the neurosurgery team conducted an angiogram and ascertained to find a 6.3 cm aneurysm. The patient is now fully healthy after the successful surgery. Most aneurysms are less than 2 cm in size. So far, there has been no record published in medical journals of successful clipping surgery on an aneurysm larger than 6 cm, the hospital stated. Dr Tiwari said that an aneurysm is a balloon-like swelling that emerges from the wall of a major artery in the brain. The wall of an aneurysm is weaker than that of a normal artery. If the aneurysm bursts, it causes severe bleeding in the brain, which can result in death and other fatal complications. This specific cause is considered the most dangerous among all cases of brain hemorrhage.
President of Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) Vijay Dhasmana congratulated the team on this spectacular success.
