Sushil Kumar takes over as State Election Commissioner of U’khand

Former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Sushil Kumar has been appointed as the new State Election Commissioner (SEC) of Uttarakhand. He assumed the charge of the new assignment at the State Election Commission on Thursday afternoon. After the end of the tenure of former IAS officer Chandrashekhar Bhatt the important post of SEC was lying vacant for the last eight months. The order for appointment of Kumar on the post of SEC was issued by the secretary Panchayati Raj, Chandresh Kumar on Thursday. The appointment of Kumar assumes importance in the wake of upcoming elections of the urban local bodies (ULB) and three- tier Panchayati Raj system.
Kumar is an officer of 2005 batch of IAS (Uttarakhand cadre). He started his career in the administrative services as an officer of Provincial Civil Services (PCS) and has worked on many positions in the State government. He retired as Garhwal commissioner last year. Before entering State civil services, Kumar was an officer in the engineering core of the Indian Army.
Talking to The Pioneer after assuming charge of the SEC, Kumar said that holding the upcoming ULB elections in a free and fair manner will be his priority. He said that after the ULB elections the elections for three tier Panchayati raj bodies are scheduled and the State Election Commission will make all the necessary preparations for them in advance.
