The Uttarakhand Transport Ministerial Employees Union resumed work on Friday after the Transport department revoked the suspension of four transport officials who were suspended for alleged negligence during checking in Rishikesh that had allegedly led to the accident in Rudraprayag on June 15, causing the death of 16 tourists.
According to the union members, the three-day State-wide work boycott allegedly caused a loss of about Rs six crore to the department. After carrying out a work boycott of two hours for a few days, the union members finally started a complete work boycott on Tuesday after the department did not accept their demand of cancelling the suspension of four officials.
The union members were terming the suspension as an injustice claiming that the government suspended the transport officials under pressure just to hold someone accountable for the accident while other involved parties remain unpunished. According to the State president of the union, Sushma Chaudhary, the union had asked the transport commissioner Brijesh Kumar Sant to cancel the suspension of the four suspended officials.
After the three days of work boycott, the union members met the commissioner on Friday who finally cancelled the suspension of all officers. She along with union members expressed their gratitude towards the department. The work was resumed in all transport offices on Friday, Chaudhary said.
