Swarup stresses on need for informed and empowered consumer

Consumer Affairs secretary Anand Swarup stressed on the need for an informed and empowered consumer, stating that the joint role of organisations, industries and consumers is crucial for protecting consumer rights. He was speaking as the chief guest at an awareness programme organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Dehradun branch office to mark World Consumer Rights Day. The objective of the programme was to raise consumer awareness about consumer protection through quality, safety and standardisation.
BIS Dehradun chief and director Saurabh Tiwari highlighted the efforts being made by the BIS and the Department of Consumer Affairs to protect consumer interests. He informed participants about the BIS Care App and encouraged consumers to use it to verify product authenticity and lodge complaints.
The programme also included a technical session. Department of Chemical Engineering scientist Sachin Menon joined the session virtually and delivered a detailed lecture on the role of standards and the importance of safe packaging. All the speakers stressed on the need for standards compliance, quality assurance and awareness in strengthening consumer protection. According to BIS officials, the event was attended by over 120 participants including industry representatives, academicians, government officials and consumers.
