Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat said that the NTPC’s Tapovan hydro power project should be shut down to save the existence of Joshimath. The construction of the Helang-Marwadi bypass should also be shut down. Rawat said this after reaching Joshimath and interacting with families affected by the land subsidence in the city on Sunday. He also participated in the protest demonstration going on in the Tehsil campus. Rawat said that the amount announced for affected families as immediate assistance by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dham is disappointingly less and should be at least Rs 15,000 per family. Rawat further said that he strongly criticises the fact that when the local MLA had gone to meet the chief minister and discuss the Joshimath issue with him in the past, the meeting could not take place.
