Teenage victim was possibly pregnant during gangrape in Dehradun ISBT

Monday, 26 AUGUST 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The victim in the Dehradun ISBT gangrape case was reportedly pregnant when she was allegedly gangraped by five men in an Uttarakhand Roadways bus on August 12. She had been feeling unwell for the past few days and a recent medical examination revealed that she was probably pregnant at the time of the incident. The victim had recently disclosed during a session with officials that she had been raped previously in her hometown of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. The chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), Geeta Khanna, told The Pioneer that the girl was bleeding, prompting a medical test that revealed a ‘missed abortion’ where the foetus or embryo remains inside the uterus. Khanna stated that the child has experienced numerous traumatic events but the administration is providing all possible care. She also expressed concern over the alleged lack of urgency in handling the case at government hospitals in Dehradun. She noted delays during the medical examination at Deen Dayal Upadhyay (Coronation) Hospital, claiming that the authorities did not handle the case with the required promptness. She added that Coronation Hospital should have been better equipped to manage such cases rather than relying on the Government Doon Medical College hospital. She also informed that considering this incident, she has written to the Health department to conduct POCSO reorientation training for the staff at all 13 district hospitals under the chief medical officers (CMOs).
Meanwhile, the officials informed that the police took the two main accused—the driver and conductor of the Roadways bus—to Delhi’s Kashmere Gate ISBT, from where they had brought the girl to Dehradun ISBT on the night of August 12. The police recreated the crime sequence with the help of these two accused. All five accused were interrogated and sent back to jail after their two-day remand ended on Saturday. The investigation is ongoing, the officials said.
