Tension erupts after a mazar is razed down near Nahar Patri in Haridwar

Tension erupted in Bahadarabad near Uttarakhand Sanskrit University after a police team razed down a mazar near Nahar Patri. As the news spread, the people belonging to a minority community assembled and started sloganeering against the State government. As the crowd swelled, traffic movement got stalled. Police charged baton to disperse the crowd and clear the road. As precautionary measure, a strong contingent of police force was deployed.

Notably, in June, the administration team with the assistance of police team razed down a mazar situated on the land of irrigation department. At that time, a notice was served on the caretaker of the mazar located in Nahar Patri. 

The police team led by senior officers arrived and requested the mazar caretaker to remove the holy books and other holy symbols. The caretaker asked for more time. But the SDM (sadar) Pruran Singh Rana did not comply and the mazar was razed down.

As the news of the mazar being razed down spread fast, the youths belonging to the minority community came from nearby villages and demonstrated on the road, terming the razing down of the mazar as a biased action against a particular religious community.

As there was tension in the area, police force remained deployed.  SDM (sadar) Pruran Singh Rana said that they were demolishing unauthorised structures irrespective of their religious status in course of the anti-encroachment operation. He further said that structures which are old and which possess right documents are not being touched.
