‘The Modern in Print’ screening hosted by Navrachana University
The documentary celebrates block printing art & Mumbai’s cultural transformation

Navrachana University hosted a special screening of the documentary ‘The Modern in Print’ made by Mala Sinha and Suchitra Balaubrahmanyan that captures the nuanced journey of block printing in a modernising Mumbai, delving into the evolution of this intricate art in the commercial capital of India. Critics said after watching the documentary that it is a compelling commentary on the legacy of textile printing as both an art form and a testament to the metropolis’s transformation over the years with tradition and contemporary influences being delicately balanced.
An insightful panel discussion followed the screening with the participation of a number of distinguished figures from the arts and design community like Mala Sinha (textile designer, researcher and co-founder of Bodhi), Suchitra Balaubrahmanyan (design historian and visiting professor), Dinaz Kalwachawala (documentary filmmaker), Amit Bhavsar (executive producer and music director), Jerry Pinto (poet and novelist) and Francis Corla of Corla – Sauza & Company.
In her address, Tejalben Amin said that such screenings offer invaluable platforms for bringing together esteemed professionals to engage in meaningful dialogues.
Prof Pratyush Shankar highlighted the importance of this screening for students in architecture, design and journalism. He dwelt on the profound social power of cities like Mumbai to inspire creativity and innovation.
