Theatre workshop for children commences at Doon University

Under the aegis of Women’s Cell, IQAC, School of Languages and Department of Folk and Performing Arts of the Doon University have started a two-week theatre workshop for the children of the university staff and others aged between four and 14 years.

The university officials said that the initiative aims at holistic personality development of the children through theatre where children will learn to overcome inhibitions and be socially inclusive.

Doon University vice- chancellor Surekha Dangwal inaugurated the workshop. Speaking on the occasion she said that theatre is a suitable medium to awaken the imagination of children.  “These kinds of activities are essential for the psychological and social growth of the mind and the developing children stand most to benefit from them,” she said.

Two teachers from the Department of Folk and Performing Arts, Doon University, Ajit Panwar and Rakesh Bhatt, who are conducting the workshop, said that they have designed the exercises and activities aiming at instilling confidence in the children. They further said that these would build up towards a special theatre performance by the children on May 24, the culmination day.

Coordinator of the School of Languages, Chetana Pokhriyal said that these kinds of programmes help the institution in its community outreach efforts.
