Udham Singh Nagar police arrested three accused wanted in a gang rape case after an encounter late on Monday night. One of the accused was shot in the leg during the exchange of fire. He was taken to the district hospital for treatment.
The accused were identified as Joga Singh and Ravinder. The third accused was identified as Gurbaz, who suffered bullet wounds in a semi-encounter. He is a resident of Kalkatti village in Gadarpur. Singh and Ravinder are residents of Ajjuwala village in Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh.
Chaos was witnessed on Tuesday when the Rudrapur police took the arrested accused to the crime scene for inspection and collection of evidence. During the process, the two accused allegedly attempted to escape from police custody. The locals also grabbed them and allegedly beat both the accused, following which police arrested them and took them to the Rudrapur police station.
The Udham Singh Nagar superintendent of police Ajay Ganpati said that three accused were travelling on a motorcycle in the Bagwara area. Our police team tried to stop them during checking. However, the suspects allegedly tried to escape after seeing the police.
The police chased them and surrounded the motorcycle. ” The accused then opened fire at the police team. The police fired back in self defence. During the firing, Gurbaz was hit in the leg. He was taken to the hospital, Ganpati said.
He said illegal country-made pistols, live cartridges and other evidence linked to the case were recovered from the accused. SSP Ganpati also visited the district hospital and questioned the injured accused. Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
