Three members of a family died on the spot and two others were seriously injured in a head-on collision between an Alto car and a Scorpio SUV on Rampur Road in the wee hours on Tuesday. The injured are being treated at the Sushila Tiwari government hospital in Haldwani where their condition is stated to be critical.
According to officials, Hafiz Sajid (32), Shahjahan (46) and Afsari (73) died in the mishap while Muskan (22) and Jahid (36) were seriously injured in the accident, all residents of Vanbhulpura in Haldwani.
A family member Akhtari Begum is under treatment for cancer in Bilaspur and the accident victims had gone to visit her on Monday night. The accident occurred on the Rudrapur-Haldwani highway when they were returning at about 1 AM on Tuesday. According to eye witnesses the SUV came at high speed from the direction of Haldwani and collided with the Alto coming the opposite direction. The police and locals somehow managed to extricate the bodies and injured from the wreck. The Scorpio driver absconded from the scene though his accomplice was apprehended by the police. The accident has cast a pall of gloom as Sajid’s wife is pregnant and expected to deliver within the next few days.
