A notorious criminal from Uttar Pradesh was shot in the leg in a police encounter in the jungle at Timli in Dharmawala area of Dehradun early on Friday. The police arrested three accused from the spot on charges of holding a man hostage to gunpoint to rob his house last week. The complainant Furqan, a resident of Sahaspur, registered a complaint stating that in the wee hours of June 6, four unknown miscreants entered his house, held him hostage at gunpoint and looted jeweller, Rs 70,000 in cash and a scooty. The police registered an FIR. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh formed four teams to investigate the case. The teams checked the CCTV cameras installed on all the routes leading to the incident spot and its surroundings. Along with this, while conducting the investigation, the informer system was also activated by doing verification of the accused involved in such incidents in the past and the criminals released from jail. Apart from this, three teams were sent to the bordering districts, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Paonta Sahib to gather evidence against robbers. The police received information during the investigation that the robbers were allegedly coming back to Dehradun in a utility vehicle to carry out another major crime. The police team started checking near the Timli area late at night on Thursday. During the early hours of Friday, the police tried to stop a utility vehicle coming from Saharanpur but the driver broke the police barrier at high speed and fled with the vehicle towards Dharmawala. When the police team chased the vehicle, it collided with a tree in the forest between Timli and Dharmawala. The police arrested the utility driver Ramzani on the spot. However, the other accused in the vehicle Bablu Badshah opened fire on the police team and started running towards the forest. In the retaliatory action, Bablu got shot in his leg and was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. The SSP said that the accused revealed during the interrogation that the whole robbery was planned by the complainant’s wife’s cousin due to personal rivalry. The police arrested three accused- Farid, Bablu and Ramzan while three are still absconding, Singh said.
