Late on Saturday night, the Corbett tiger reserve authorities succeeded in tranquilising and capturing a tigress believed to be responsible for killing a man earlier on April 17. The Corbett administration had been using camera traps, drones and other mediums to track the big cat suspected of having killed the man. After securing permission from higher authorities to capture the tiger, two cages had also been placed near the site of the incident. Late on Saturday night, the team managed to tranquilise the tigress. The big cat is being kept in the Dhela rescue centre where she is being monitored by the senior veterinary officer. According to the officials, the tigress is aged about two to three years. A DNA sample was collected from the tigress and is being sent along with a DNA sample collected earlier to the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad for analysis to ascertain whether the tigress rescue was responsible for killing the man.
It will be recalled that Manorathpur Bashitola village resident Pramod Tiwari was killed by a big cat on April 17 while he was guarding a wheat field. His body was found nearby. The death had elicited strong protests from the local residents. The Corbett authorities had been tracking and monitoring the big cat since then. The rescue team which managed to capture the tigress consisted of senior veterinary officer Dr Dushyant Sharma, Corbett tiger reserve deputy director Diganth Nayak, Bijrani sub divisional officer Amit Gwasakoti, Kalagarh sub divisional officer Shalini Joshi and other department officials.
