The price of tomatoes has increased once again after a brief period of relief. This surge in price has angered the local citizens as the rates have reached up to Rs 300 per kilogramme in Dehradun. Many people have claimed that vegetable vendors are setting their own prices for tomatoes. However, officials claimed that lack of availability in the market has once again led to a surge in the price of tomatoes. Commenting on the situation, local resident Ramesh Gupta said, “The recent increase in tomato prices has had a negative financial impact on the general public. Initially, officials had claimed that the prices would drop in the coming days. However, the reality is quite the opposite with consumers facing even higher prices. Furthermore, retailers are exploiting the situation by charging arbitrary prices for tomatoes.”
Senior inspector of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Ajay Dabral said, “The cost of tomatoes in the Dehradun market has risen once again due to a shortage of supply. Lack of availability is one of the main reasons for the price rise. In Dehradun, about 2,000-2,500 quintals of tomatoes were earlier supplied daily which has now dropped to 400-600 quintals per day. Excessive rain and gap in demand and supply are the two main reasons for the rise in tomato prices.” He further said the tomato supply originating from Karnataka and Uttarkashi is poised to increase in the near future and that the price of tomatoes is predicted to drop later this month.
