Surface parking will not solve Nainital’s parking mess

In latest news from Uttarakhand, the founder president of Maa Naina Devi Nainital Vyapar Mandal Puneet Tandon requested the Nainital MLA Sarita Arya to ensure that the parking lot that is to come up in the erstwhile Metropole hotel complex is not a surface parking (ground level) for 400-500 vehicles but a multi-storey one. He presented the logic that whatever is to be done should be done once. It would amount to wasting the taxpayers’ money if a surface parking is built now and then it gets developed into a multi-storey one, he wrote, adding that the money should be spent once.
He further wrote that only a multi-storey parking space could be a solution to the huge parking problem and subsequent traffic congestion Nainital town has been facing where lakhs of tourists come all the year round.
He said that the official transfer of the property acquired by the Centre under the Enemy Property Act to the State government should be done at the earliest.
According to Tandon, MLA Sarita Arya has assured him that she would take up the matter with the chief minister and the district magistrate. She also asked the traders’ association to serve a memorandum on the matter immediately.
