Traders & locals erect shelter for stray cattle

Wednesday, 04 January 2023 | PNS | NEW TEHRI

With the authorities failing to care for stray cattle with the level of mercury consistently dropping, traders in the Khadi market on the Chamba-Rishikesh highway have constructed shelters on the roadside to provide some relief to the stray cattle. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had recently directed officials to ensure that people and also cattle are sheltered from the chilling cold in the State. However, with nothing being done for the stray cattle by the local authorities here, the traders erected a shed of tarpaulin near the main market for the cattle otherwise forced to spend the night under the open sky in the chill of the winter. The people passing through the highway are also praising the traders a lot after seeing their effort.

These days in the month of January it is bitterly cold especially at night with the maximum and minimum temperature in New Tehri being recorded at 11.8 degrees Celsius and 2.8 degrees Celsius respectively on Tuesday. In such a situation, the destitute cattle in the Khadi market on the Chamba-Rishikesh highway were forced to brave the elements under the open sky in the bitter cold. When no arrangement was made by the government system for these destitute bovines, the local businessmen along with the local residents and the people of the taxi union took the initiative to take care of these bovines. The traders and the taxi union members pooled in funds and bought tarpaulins and other materials to make shelters for the cows.A temporary tarpaulin shed has been erected near the market along the highway. The destitute cattle roaming on the streets can now take shelter from the rain and frost here. Khari trade board secretary Sheeshpal Sajwan, former district Panchayat member Anil Bhandari and others are engaged in this work.Along with making a shelter for the destitute cattle in the area, arrangements for fodder and water are also being made. Former district Panchayat member Anil Bhandari said that people abandon the cows on the roads after they stop giving milk. Such cattle should be protected.
