Police planning various measures in phased manner to address traffic woes
The district police will implement a new plan for e-rickshaws on selected routes of the city from December 1. This move is part of the measures being planned by the authorities to improve traffic management in Haridwar which is visited by lakhs of pilgrims and tourists which also results in traffic congestion.
The lakhs of pilgrims visiting Haridwar to bathe in the Ganga river and visit other pilgrimage centres along with the influx of tourists either visiting the city or passing through results in frequent traffic congestion causing major inconvenience to both the visitors and the locals. The Haridwar police have prepared a traffic plan for e-rickshaws as part of their efforts to resolve the traffic congestion in the city.
Superintendent of police (Crime/Traffic) Rekha Yadav said that Haridwar faces traffic issues due to the large number of visitors arriving here. “We are planning various measures in a phased manner to resolve the traffic congestion. In the first phase, 16 routes have been fixed on which a fixed number of e-rickshaws will be allowed to operate. A meeting has been held with the officials of the unions and for those who are not in the e-rickshaw drivers’ union, arrangements have been made in the traffic office, from there they can choose their route. This system will be applicable from December 1 and strict action will be taken against those who do not follow this system,” she said.
