In view of heavy traffic on main roads during school timings in Dehradun, the director of the Traffic Directorate Mukhtar Mohsin has directed Dehradun superintendent of police, traffic, to hold a meeting with the management of schools concerned to ask them to adopt staggered timings. He said that if all school management agree to this plan, it will help in minimising the additional volume of traffic on roads during peak hours. He said that a team from directorate recently completed an onsite inspection of the identified 15 bottleneck points located in Dehradun city with the aim of improving the traffic system.
These bottleneck points include Rispana to Nehru Colony trisection stretch, Doon Hospital junction, Fountain Chowk, Survey Chowk to Sahastradhara Crossing stretch, Hathibarkala, Darshanlal Chowk, Balliwala junction and Lansdowne junction. After the teams conducted the inspection of these points, Mohsin conducted a seminar with the senior officials of Dehradun traffic police. He also issued several instructions to them and ordered to ensure their implementation. He said that if any vehicle is parked on the road near the identified bottleneck points, personnel will make an announcement to remove it.
If the owner does not act, it should be towed immediately. He asked officials to ensure all commercial establishments utilise their parking spaces like in the basement and courtyard within three days. Those who do not comply with the order must be penalised under Motor Vehicle Act and Police Act, said Mohsin. He said that City Patrol Unit (CPU) will be on duty at the identified points during peak hours and will continuously operate at the junctions to decongest the traffic. He said that the traffic personnel will be on duty with a loud hailer through which they can prohibit illegal parking near main roads to ensure smooth traffic at junctions and bottleneck points.
