Transport department cracks down on Ola, Uber and Rapido, seizes 32 vehicles

In a strict move against complaints regarding the unauthorised operation of Ola, Uber, BlaBla and Rapido vehicles without aggregator licenses in Dehradun, the Transport department seized 32 vehicles during an inspection drive on Wednesday. The regional transport officer (Enforcement) Shailesh Tiwari said that five enforcement teams conducted checks in various areas of the city including Saharanpur Road, Premnagar, Chakrata Road, Haridwar Road and the main city area. A total of 32 vehicles including several private two-wheelers operating under Rapido, were seized for lack of valid documents.

Tiwari said that no individual or company can operate as an aggregator without obtaining the necessary license according to the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2020 and Uttarakhand On-Demand (IT-Based) Contract Carriage Vehicle Rules 2020 (as amended in 2024). He said that RTO has sent several notices to these companies but they have yet to acquire the required licenses. “Aggregators operating vehicles through online platforms without licenses are subject to fines, which can go up to Rs one lakh. If they continue to violate the rules, their operations may be permanently cancelled,” Tiwari said.

He also appealed to vehicle operators not to operate their vehicles under services like Rapido, Ola and Uber as these companies are yet to obtain aggregator licenses. “Operators should ensure their vehicles are registered for commercial use before operating on these platforms. Those found violating these rules by renting out private vehicles may face heavy fines. Operators can visit the RTO office for further information on this matter,” he added.
